Summary

A numerical and experimental study is carried out on melting heat transfer of a phase change material (PCM) around horizontal tubes in a PCM heat storage tank. The tubes are placed in a vertical or staggered array. Variation in the specific heat of the PCM is incorporated in order to account for the phase change. The body fitted coordinate system is used to compute for an arbitrary shape of tubes. Numerical results are obtained for melting front contours of the PCM, melting volume fraction, isotherms and flow patterns. The comparison of the results with experimental counterparts shows a qualitative agreement.
