Summary

CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE CLAUDE SYSTEM REVEALS AMPLE SCOPE FOR MODIFICATION. TWO IMPROVEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE FIRST AVOIDS THE AUXILIARY REFRIGERATION SYSTEM AND IS A SINGLE FLUID SYSTEM, THOUGH THERE ARE STILL THREE COMPRESSORS AND TWO EXPANDERS. A FURTHER IMPROVEMENT IS SHOWN TO FOLLOW BY ELIMINATING ONE HEAT EXCHANGER. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT FOR UNIT LIQUID YIELD THE MINIMUM HEAT EXCHANGER AREA AND MINIMUM WORK REQUIRED CORRESPOND TO A TEMPERATURE OF 37.5 K AT THE INLET TO THE JOULE-THOMSON VALVE, WHICH IS THE CRITICAL TEMPERATURE FOR HYDROGEN.
