THE PAPER DISCUSSES THE NEED FOR SMALL HELIUM AND NITROGEN LIQUEFACTION PLANTS HAVING A CAPACITY UP TO ABOUT 200 LITRES/HOUR. VARIOUS PROCESSES ARE CONSIDERED WITH PREFERENCE GIVEN TO THE CLAUDE CYCLE ON THE BASIS OF SIMPLICITY AND GOOD THERMAL EFFICIENCY. OUTSTANDING RELIABILITY CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH ROTATING MACHINES BUT AN EFFECTIVE FAULT SYSTEM IS NEEDED.
