EARLY DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DESIGNS OF SENSORS FOR STANDARD PLATINUM RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS ARE REVIEWED. SENSORS OF TWO SIMPLE DESIGNS ARE DESCRIBED. THE BASIC REQUIREMENT THAT THE PLATINUM WIRE FORMING THE SENSOR SHOULD BE FREELY HELD TO ALLOW FOR THERMAL EXPANSION DUE TO TEMPERATURE CHANGES AND KEEP THE SENSOR IN STRAIN-FREE STATE IS MET WITH. THE PLATINUM RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS WITH SUCH SENSORS SHOW SATISFACTORY REPRODUCTIBILITY OF TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT, IE WITHIN ABOUT 0.001 K (0.001 DEG C). THE DESIGN OF THE THERMOMETER HEAD USED IS ALSO DESCRIBED.
