Summary

Combined heat and power (CHP) is an often overlooked but very effective tool in the combat against global warming. The electric efficiency of modern CHP is over 40% and total efficiency typically 85%. Absorption chillers can extend the operating hours of a CHP; however, the rather low COP of chillers at a temperature of 80°C were an obstacle to the development of trigeneration. The introduction of two-stage chillers directly driven by the heat of the fume gases of a gas engine show much better results. One of the first European applications is in Munich. The two-stage chiller connected to the CHP system delivers 750 kW at a COP of 1.2.
