Summary

A computer simulation of combined and cogeneration gas turbine (GT) cycles with inlet air cooling has been conducted. The combined cycle simulation model incorporated simple gas and steam turbine cycles with inlet air cooling using absorption refrigeration (LiBr-H2O and Aqua-Ammonia) powered by steam bled from the steam turbine. Also, vapour compression, evaporative and fogging cooling techniques were incorporated. The cogeneration GT cycle with inlet air cooling consisted of a simple GT cycle with heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) which powered by an absorption (LiBr-H2O and Aqua-Ammonia) cooling unit. As with the combined cycle case, the vapour compression, evaporative and fogging cooling techniques were also incorporated. The accuracy of the models developed and the prediction results obtained is ensured by comparison with performance data obtained from different gas turbine engines and two gas turbine installations with combined cycles at two different locations; Monterrey and Massachusetts, USA. Also, a life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is carried out to compare the economic impacts of different cycle alternatives by comparing their net present value (NPV) with the discount and inflation rates taken at 0.08 and 0.03, respectively. The results indicate that for a simple gas turbine (203 MW ISO rating) with evaporative or fogging inlet air cooling the efficiency is around 50%. The calculated efficiency of the cogeneration cycle with inlet air cooling using absorption or vapour compression refrigeration is around 56% while that for the combined cycle with inlet air cooling (absorption or vapour compression refrigeration) is around 60%.
