Summary
Freeze-dried collagen sponges are used as biodegradable connective tissue implants. The microstructure of the pores in the collagen sponges is extremely important for the migration of cells. Since the porous structure after freeze-drying corresponds to the ice crystal morphology, the microstructure mainly depends on the freezing process applied. In industrial production processes the collagen suspension is commonly frozen in a tray that is immersed in a cryogenic bath. Freezing conditions vary within such a sample resulting in an inhomogeneous pore structure. In contrast, by using directional solidification, collagen sponges with a homogeneous and adjustable microstructure can be produced.
