Summary

NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE STORAGE QUALITY OF APPLES WERE OBSERVED IN A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING FERTILIZERS. THESE EFFECTS WERE AN INCREASE IN THE TENDENCY TOWARDS COREFLUSH IN APPLES, IN THE ACCELERATION OF BREAKDOWN AND DECAY AND IN THE IMPAIRMENT OF THE GENERAL STORAGE ABILITY. WITH VARIETIES SUCH AS GOLDEN DELICIOUS AND GRANNY SMITH WHICH HAVE GOOD STORAGE QUALITIES, THESE NEGATIVE EFFECTS WERE NOT OBSERVED. THESE TRIALS INDICATE THAT BETTER FRUIT QUALITY IS ENSURED BY APPLYING FERTILIZER IN THE AUTUMN AND/OR SPRING ONLY.
