Summary

Adsorption chillers are subject to fast temperature changes at the outlets of the hydraulic circuits. Depending on the peripherals the changes at the outlets lead to fluctuating temperatures at the inlets. This study reveals the influences of fast temperature fluctuations at the inlets to the operational behaviour of an adsorption chiller, especially on cooling power and COP. A transient model has been used for this investigation. Two different operation concepts are analyzed: 1) adsorption chillers with fixed cycle length; and 2) adsorption chillers with variable cycle length but a given set point for the mean chilled water outlet temperature. The focus is on the appearance of a temperature fluctuation at different times in the cycle. It turns out that the influence is little when dealing with fixed cycle lengths but fluctuations may trigger premature cycle termination when a controller is involved.
