Summary

AIR INCLUSION IN ICE INCREASES THE OPERATION COST OF MAINTAINING ARTIFICIAL ICE IN SKATING RINKS. AIR IN THE ICE DEPENDS ON THE SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF THE WATER AS IT CRYSTALLIZES. BY REFERING TO A SOLUTION OF THE DIFFUSION EQUATION, THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE THIS PROCESS ARE ANALYSED. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS ARETHE THICKNESS OF THE WATER LAYER AND THE CRYSTALLIZATION RATE. A CALCULATION EXAMPLE IS GIVEN.
