Summary

The effects of UV-B radiation on the human body are reviewed and discussed at length: one of the current difficulties is to develop a suitable method for predicting its effect. Arguments for and against Direct Calculation, the Black Box and the Intermediate Solution are then considered. The following topics are discussed and illustrated: the effect of ozone depletion on sunburn, increase in skin cancer, cutaneous melanoma, snow blindness, cataracts and photodermatoses. The possibility of an increase in infectious diseases and the effect of ozone on vaccination against disease are also discussed. The authors conclude by discussing the effect of ozone depletion on animal health, much of which shows strong similarity to the known facts and predictions for human health. G.R.S.
