Summary

The deficiencies in the hygienic design of the cooling towers and evaporative condensers, and the lack of automatic and effective cleaning systems, are probably the most important causes of the serious sanitary problem that can be generated by the contamination, proliferation and emission, through aerosols, of the pathogen Legionella pneumophilla. A fully hygienic design of these equipments is proposed, described and experimentally validated in this work. This evaporative cooler incorporates an automatic system of cleaning (without disassembling) and disinfection, that works in a programmed form, and with the adequate frequency, so that good conditions of hygiene are ensured. It incorporates (i) design characteristics that reduce or eliminate the risk of being a source of contamination for water, in a direct or indirect form, and (ii) an automatic and effective system of cleaning and disinfection that reaches all the internal corners of the equipment, avoiding accumulations of dirt and biofilms.
