Summary

Carbon dioxide refrigeration systems have been successfully integrated in European supermarkets. However, environmental awareness is increasingly growing market pressure to supply energy efficient waste heat recovery systems integrated with refrigeration systems. In some cases, waste heat recovery has become mandatory in commercial refrigeration, with the use of the available heat for heating and domestic hot water. CO2 systems have a low critical point, higher pressure and higher compression temperature when compared to traditional refrigerant systems. An integrated system approach has been used here to leverage these advantages. It can be used for two temperature applications at the same time, and can be operated using a load following controls strategy, by focusing on total system COP and not only the refrigeration COP. An additional gas cooler bypass mode can minimize the amount of heat rejection. This paper provides the first operating experiences and field data of a standard CO2 heat recovery module, in which the system also takes control over the water loop to avoid dynamics of unnecessary refrigerant maldistribution.
