Summary

The 80K thermal shields are used to minimise the steady state heat load on the superconducting magnets system (SCMS) of SST-1, which operate at 4.5 K. There are total 130 such thermal shields of nine different complex shapes cover the complete torus as well as cryostat of SST-1. In order to cool these thermal shields down to 80K, an integrated liquid nitrogen distribution network is envisaged. The salient features of this integrated liquid nitrogen distribution system are leak tightness of 1x10?9 Pa-m3/s, heat load of < 5 W/m and pressure drop of 5x102 Pa/m. To meet these technical requirements, super insulated vacuum jacketed (SIVJ) cryogenic transfer line concept is adopted with appropriate flexibility features. The paper describes the design procedures, fabrication activities, testing protocols, installation and commissioning and the highlights of final performance results during the recent cool down of 80K thermal shields of SST-1 using the integrated liquid nitrogen distribution network.
