Investigation of a diffusion absorption chiller using a plate heat exchanger as generator.

Summary

Diffusion absorption chillers (DAC) are purely heat-driven and have no mechanically moving components. They use natural refrigerants, ammonia and water. So far, DACs are used commercially as refrigerators for hotels and caravanning. This research concentrates on developing a DAC for air conditioning.
A compact generator unit consisting of a plate heat exchanger (PHX) and a vertical lift tube is used for the first time. A heating circuit supplies the heat to the generator so that any heat source can drive the machine. Due to a large heat transfer area and high heat transfer coefficients achieved by using a PHX, lower temperatures are sufficient to drive the DAC.
This paper discusses preliminary investigations on the pumping performance of the generator unit. The heat transfer in the generator is analyzed and satisfying overall heat transfer coefficients up to π‘˜π‘˜=1171π‘Šπ‘Šπ‘šπ‘šβˆ’2πΎπΎβˆ’1 were found. The maximum cooling capacity achieved by the DAC investigated is 1038π‘Šπ‘Š.
