Summary

This study aims to clarify the mechanism to determine whether workers find the thermal environment of an indoor environment acceptable. For this purpose, the acceptability-voting device Ostracon was developed, which can record the physical environment when the workers express a complaint. The workers can push the button of Ostracon to vote when they feel that the thermal environment is unacceptable. Ostracon was used to measure whether 80 persons felt that the thermal environment in five offices during the summer was acceptable. The results showed that subjects expressed that the environment was unacceptable even when the temperature and humidity were within a comfortable range. It is considered that the workers’ complaints were influenced by other factors in the environment such as changes in their metabolic rates and personal sequence of thermal environment.
