Is ammonia safe?

Summary

Some people still persist in stating that NH3 (R717) is a dangerous refrigerant. Several years ago, when a disaster occurred in Enschede (The Netherlands) because a firework factory caught fire, some newspapers published horror scenarios, asserting that cities are full of time bombs, such as slaughterhouses, breweries and skating rinks provided with ammonia refrigerating plants. Such sensational reporting resulted only in the sole danger that ammonia can present, namely 'panic'. It is obvious, since CFCs appeared on the market, that from certain sides there was a campaign against the use of ammonia refrigerating plants. This disinformation is still going on.
