Summary

THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES METHODS OF SEALING PIPES ON THE SEABED BY FREEZING PLUGS OF WATER USING A SECONDARY REFRIGERANT SUPPLIED FROM A SUPPORT VESSEL. THE PIPE WALL TEMPERATURE IS REDUCED TO -50 DEG C FOLLOWING TRIALS IN TEST TANKS WITH A SEA WATER TEMPERATURE OF 15 DEG C. FREEZING THE PIPE WITH LIQUID NITROGEN WAS NOT ENTIRELY SUCCESSFUL DUE TO DIFFICULTIES IN FEEDING REFRIGERANT TO THE WORK SITE. A HEAT FLUX MONITORING SYSTEM IS USED TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THE FREEZING FRONT. G.R.S.
