Summary

In order to machine magnetocaloric La-Fe-Si based alloys the thermal decomposition reaction at which the NaZn(13) phase decomposes into alpha-Fe and La-rich phases is applied. Decomposed material does not exhibit negative thermal expansion at the phase transition temperature of the NaZn(13) phase. Therefore it can be machined without inducing stress. Here we present results on the kinetics and composition dependence of the decomposition reaction in (La,Nd)-(Fe,Co)-Si-C alloys.
