Large (250 m3) helium gas storage tank.

Summary

The large hadron collider (LHC) is a new high energy accelerator project under construction at the European laboratory for particle physics (CERN). This new proton and ion beam collider facility will be installed in the existing underground ring tunnel of approximately 27 kilometer circumference, presently used for the large electron-positron collider (LEP). The main components of the LHC are about 1800 superconducting twin-aperture magnets which operate in superfluid helium at a temperature of 1.9 K and require cryogenics around the whole circumference. The total helium inventory of the machine is about 100 tonnes. For storage of part of the helium inventory in gaseous form, pressure vessels will be installed at eight sites around the LHC machine.
