Test of high mass flow rate pump in He I.
Author(s) : MAYRI C., BERTHIER R., GENINI L.
Summary
The barrel toroid superconducting magnet of the ATLAS experiment will be cooled by 600 g/s of liquid helium I, formerly foreseen to be provided by a two-pump set. With the help of a control valve, which created a load in the test loop, the authors measured the pump characteristic curves to validate their performances. They also investigate their working limits and the cavitation phenomenon. Each pump was powered by a variable frequency drive (VFD), which sent all necessary information to a dedicated programme stored in a programmable logic controller. The authors tested the reliability of the control and particularly the switch from one pump to the other.
