Large Hadron Collider (LHC): a global project.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

CERN is to construct a LHC, a superconducting ring to probe interactions between proton constituents. The ring will be installed in the existing 27 km tunnel of the LEP (Large Electron Positron) collider. The LEP magnets will be removed and re-installed above, allowing the LHC to be on the tunnel floor. A separate cryoline running parallel with the existing cryostat may include pipes carrying helium at different temperatures. It is important to avoid temperature fluctuations along the complete arc. An LHC string test has given test results for the LHC cryogenic and other control systems. These will enable superfluid helium at 1.9 K to be used for the first time on this scale. It is calculated that the LHC will take 25 litres per metre to cool from room temperature to 1.9 K in 5 days. D.W.H.
