Summary

A Lattice Boltzmann (LB) scheme is developed for the simulation of the heat and mass transfer during cooling of packed cut flowers. The LB method has been chosen for its attractive simplicity and its appeal to physical intuition. Mathematical and numerical analysis have shown that our LB scheme is consistent with a convection-diffusion equation with heat and mass transfer, even up to high grid Peclet and Courant numbers. Comparison of the simulation results of the LB scheme with experimental data shows that the model applies quite well to cooling of packed cut flowers. The authors conclude that the LB scheme is suitable as a generic framework for the modelling of heat and mass transfer processes in packages of agricultural products.
