Summary

Summarises the results of statistical analyses of some 10,000 water samples taken from 84 cooling towers in Australia over four years. Concludes that: water temperature and system usage both correlated strongly with Legionella growth; multiplication is primarily at the warmest surfaces as biofilm; the heat exchanger and return line to the cooling tower are likely to be preferred sites for Legionella colonisation and growth; routine cleaning of cooling towers should include addition of a disinfectant that reaches the sites; chlorine decontamination of cooling towers is an effective crisis response to high Legionella counts and commercially-available field-tested biocides can effectively control Legionella.
