Legionnaires' disease outbreaks.
Author(s) : BRUNDRETT G.
Summary
Legionnaires' disease is a form of pneumonia occurring when susceptible individuals inhale a water aerosol which contains the legionella bacteria. Legionella bacteria prosper in dirty, lukewarm water, particularly with rust present. It is a manmade disease, which appears to be increasing in Britain. The Health and Safety Executive have an Approved Code of Practice but compliance is poor. Neglected or malfunctioning cooling towers serving chilling equipment are one of the major sources of the disease. Failings in tower operation are described together with the remedial steps necessary to minimize the risk.
