Summary

Community outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease associated with cooling towers have been reported with several common factors. Small towers have predominantly been implicated. The outbreaks are frequent in autumn and implicated systems have usually been operated after a period of shutdown. Reports on field study findings that relate system physical and operational factors to Legionella colonization of systems. Uses these data to develop a model explaining the seasonal nature of outbreaks associated with irregularly-operated cooling tower systems having high surface area to water volume characteristics.
