Low temperature thermoelectric coolers for electro-optical elements.

Summary

Significant improvement in performance of multi-stage thermoelectric coolers can be realized on using perfect single crystals of bismuth and antimony chalcogenides. The coolers developed have the advantages of low current (0.8 to 1.4 ampere) and small power expenses (from 2 to 23 watts). Maximum temperature differences of 133 and 150 K in four and six-stage coolers are achieved. These are 15 to 17 K higher than in analogous specimens on zone-melted polycrystals. For the further improvement in thermoelectric coolers performance the maximum thermoelectric figure of merit of single crystals used must be shifted to low temperatures as much as possible. The application of developed thermoelectric coolers makes it possible to considerably improve parameters of electro-optical elements to be cooled.
