Summary

The objective of the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) Programme is to control the thermonuclear energy source of a 400 MW reactor. In order to confine the hydrogen plasmas of these reactors, intense magnetic fields have to be continuously maintained in large volumes. Superconducting magnets, which have zero resistance at very low temperatures, constitute the only industrial response to this challenge.
