Summary

Tevatron is an accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, USA, which is 4 miles in circumference, has 1 000 superconducting magnets, and can accelerate protons to nearly one trillion electronvolts. 27 units (including three spares) of cold helium vapour compressor will be installed in 1993 to accomplish one trillion electronvolts by decreasing vapour pressure of liquid helium of the refrigerator from 1.4 to 0.5 atm and achieving the temperature of 3.5 K. In this compressor, a centrifugal impeller is installed at the end of the rotor supported by a self-acting gas bearing; the compressor is operated at a speed of 80,000 rpm.
