STATES THAT MAGNETIC HEAT PUMPS AND REFRIGERATORS ARE POTENTIAL REPLACEMENTS FOR VAPOUR COMPRESSION DEVICES THAT USE CHLOROFLUOROCARBON REFRIGERANTS. DESCRIBES THE BASIC FEATURES OF MAGNETIC HEAT PUMPS AND OF NEAR-ROOM TEMPERATURE DEVICES WITH LOW-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS, WHICH HAVE REACHED THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN STAGE. STATES THAT HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS SHOULD SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE DESIGN CONCEPTS AND MAY FACILITATE NEW DESIGN APPROACHES SUCH AS THOSE INVOLVING FIELD SWITCHING OF SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS TO ACCOMPLISH THE THERMODYNAMIC CYCLE.
