Summary
Magnetic refrigeration is a highly efficient refrigeration method that utilizes the "magnetocaloric effect" to generate temperature changes. By manipulating the magnetic fields, the magnetic moment and spin entropy of magnetic refrigerants can be ordered or disordered, resulting in temperature variations. Compared to conventional gas expansion refrigerators, magnetic refrigeration offers the potential for higher liquefaction efficiencies, with theoretical values exceeding 50%. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the research and development activities focused on magnetic refrigeration for hydrogen liquefaction. This paper specifically highlights the efforts carried out at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and Kanazawa University in Japan.
