THERE ARE SIMILARITIES AND DISSIMILARITIES BETWEEN MULTIPIPE RISERS AND TUBE BANKS EMPLOYED IN HEAT EXCHANGERS. FOR EXAMPLE, SQUARE ARRAYS ARE USED IN BOTH, WHILE A < SATELLITE > ARRANGEMENT USED IN SOME RISERS CANNOT BE FOUND IN HEAT EXCHANGERS. THE RESEARCH ON FLOW-INDUCED VIBRATIONS IN HEAT EXCHANGERS REVEALS MECHANISMS OF EXCITATION AND SUSTENANCE OF TUBE VIBRATION. DESIGN GUIDELINES ARE DEVISED TO AVOID THE FLOW-INDUCED VIBRATIONS. SOME OF THE RESEARCH AND MECHANISMS IDENTIFIED FOR TUBE ARRAYS ARE RELEVANT FOR MARINE RISERS. THE MAIN OBJECT OF THIS COMPARATIVE OVERVIEW IS TO COMPILE AND DISCUSS HEAT EXCHANGER DATA WHICH ARE APPLICABLE TO MARINE RISERS.
