Summary

THE VUILLEUMIER-CYCLE HEAT PUMP APPEARS TO HAVE SOME ADVANTAGES COMPARED TO OTHER HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS. IT IS ALREADY BEING INVESTIGATED EXPERIMENTALLY. THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL PRESENTED DESCRIBES THE ACTUAL PROCESS CYCLE BY A SET OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, CONSIDERING THE MAJOR LOSSES. IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE COMPUTING TIME, A SIMPLIFIED REGENERATOR MODEL WAS USED AND THE MASS FLOW RATES WERE ASSUMED TO BE LOCALLY CONSTANT IN EACH DISTINCT SECTION OF THE FLOW PASSAGES. SOME PARAMETER VARIATIONS ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED FOR A PROTOTYPE ENGINE THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNED USING THIS MODEL.
