Summary

THE ELASTIC MODULUS M AND DAMPING CONSTANT D ARE MEASURED AT TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 0.40 AND 1.75 K IN CRYSTALLINE HELIUM SAMPLES GROWN UNDER A PRESSURE OF ABOUT 3.5 MPASCALS. BY CONTINUOUSLY RECORDING M AND D IT IS POSSIBLE TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF THE GROWTH CONDITIONS AND HEAT SHOCK AND TO SELECT SAMPLES WITH REPRODUCTIBLE RESULTS. WITH SUCH SAMPLES IT IS FOUND THAT M DECREASES MONOTONOUSLY WITH THE TEMPERATURE. THIS IS INTERPRETED AS BEING DUE TO AN INCREASE OF THE DEFECT MOBILITY WITH DECREASE OF TEMPERATURE.
