MEASUREMENT OF THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF INSULATING MATERIALS AT LOW TEMPERATURE BY THE TRANSIENT HOT WIRE METHOD.

Summary
THE TRANSIENT HOT WIRE METHOD WAS EMPLOYED TO OBTAIN A SIMPLE AND RAPID METHOD FOR MEASURING THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF INSULATING MATERIALS. A DEVICE WAS USED TO MAINTAIN A GIVEN LOW TEMPERATURE AND THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WAS MEASURED FROM LIQUID NITROGEN TEMPERATURE TO ROOM TEMPERATURE. THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITIES ESTIMATED BY THE HOT WIRE METHOD WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE VALUES OBTAINED FROM A ONE-DIMENSIONAL STEADY STATE METHOD. WHEN THE ANISOTROPIC NATURE OF THE INSULANT WAS CONSIDERED, IT WAS FOUND THAT BOTH THE VALUES AGREED WITHIN 5 TO 10%.
