Measuring occupant related energy consumption in a Hi-Tech building: is it a distant dream? 1. Why is it a necessity?

Summary
It is important to measure occupant related power consumption in a building so as to focus on the high quantum of over 90% energy bandwidth. The building’s ‘Energy bandwidth’ is extremely sensitive to occupancy, and not so sensitive to the building itself. ‘Occupant sensitivity’ and ‘Human consumption pattern’ is a predominant factor of energy consumption and needs to get center stage focus in the measurement of energy in any building, especially a certified green building/hi-tech building/energy efficient building, to demonstrate its credibility over time. This would enable research and analysis on why occupants in buildings make it consume energy and how that can be reduced; how building’s energy efficiency can be increased and how occupants can be motivated to consume less. A total shift from the way we look at buildings and measure the energy consumption could create future landmarks in energy efficient buildings. Green cars are created in factory R&D’s at a fast pace of development; therefore a paradigm shift in approach can only fast-track production of energy efficient buildings, since all buildings are produced one-off, in-situ and at different locations. Mandatory measurement of occupant related energy consumption would require (a) an easy method to carry out such measurements and, (b) at an affordable price within the reach of all types of building owners. The paper attempts to provide a suitable method. The paper strongly advocates that advanced technologies create still simpler methods, in a cost effective manner.
