Summary
The exploitation of the hydrocarbon reserves in the Barents and Kara seas is imperative to Russia's economy. Towards this end it is planned to conduct low temperature studies on the behaviour of Russian steels up to 70 mm thick and on welded joints. These will be carried out at the Krylov Centre in St Petersburg where there is a special hall for testing 3-dimensional structures. On heavy duty wall, floor and ceiling sections up to 96 hydraulic force exciters can be operated simultaneously, each providing force up to 5,000 kilonewtons. D.W.H.
