Method of standardization of HFC leak standards.

Author(s) : CLODIC D., TORBEY N.

Summary

A complete standardization system is necessary in order to guarantee the sensitivity of hand leak detectors and room controllers. The French standard NF E-35422 has been issued and defines the method of testing of leak detectors. The sensitivity of leak detectors is verified on leak standards. The principle of these leak standards is straightforward. It creates a leak based on the characteristics of either a very long and small capillary tube or an orifice of some microns. HFC calibrated leaks are available on the market and make it possible to create leak flow rates in the range of 1 to 30 g/yr. Currently, no method of testing these calibrated leaks exists, so there is no sufficiently accurate method to measure leak flow rates either. For helium leak detectors, a standardization method does exist; it guarantees the flow rates of helium standard leaks. The paper presents an original method and a test bench that can be used to standardize HFC leak standards.
