Summary

Within the context of a national project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Cetim was called on by the French refrigeration industry and the French Committee for Standardization for the mechanical engineering and rubber industries (Cold – Safety and Environment section) to suggest a testing method for the tightness qualification of components and joints used in the refrigeration industry. In order to achieve this goal, it is essential to know the origins as well as the levels of refrigerant leaks. For a number of years tests were performed on components in laboratory and on site, making it possible to understand the causes of leaks. As a result of these studies, an experimental standard on the evaluation of component leakage was validated in France: XP E 35-424 Refrigerating systems and heat pumps – Qualification of component tightness. Part 1: static components (couplings, rupture and burst discs and flange and coupling assemblies). Part 2: semistatic components (pressure reducers, valves, fill valves, pressure switches, safety valves against overpressure, etc). Then, Uniclima (the French air handling, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment manufacturers association) requested the extension of this standard to a European, and subsequently an international, level. European standard EN 16084 Refrigerating systems and heat pumps – Qualification of tightness of components and joints is currently under formal vote. Work is in progress concerning standard ISO 14903. In order to evaluate and validate the final version of standard EN 16084, the Cetim and Cetiat MFCE (refrigeration equipment, air-conditioners and heat exchangers) joint professional commission called on the Sealing Technology Department of Cetim to perform the tests on different components according to this standard. This article presents the main aspects of this new standard as well as the test results.
