Minimum ventilation control for variable air volume systems: fan tracking versus workable solutions.

Author(s) : KETTLER J. P.

Summary

Improper control of the minimum ventilation rate in buildings has been cited as a possible cause of sick building syndrome in some studies. The control of the minimum ventilation rate in buildings is more difficult if the primary air-handling systems are variable air volume systems. There are some "accepted" methods of control of the minimum ventilation rate that need to be reviewed to determine if they truly control to the accuracy the industry expects. The paper reviews several options to control the minimum ventilation rate in variable air volume systems and points out a system accuracy review that should be undertaken before using fan tracking to control minimum ventilation rates.
