Summary

The study presents the development of a transportation refrigeration system equipped with heat storage for reverse cycle-hot gas defrost (the stored heat is used during the defrost cycle of the system). System performance and container operating conditions are analyzed during an experimental investigation on a 3,225 × 1,740 × 1,640 mm full-scale refrigerated container under cooling and defrosting conditions. The defrost process analysis in the evaporator coil provides quantitative information on the defrost energy efficiency. Experimental results show that the prototype system has better performance in terms of average cooling-down time (32.6% shorter), defrost time (20% shorter) and smaller fluctuations of refrigerated container's temperature compared with conventional hot gas reverse cycle system without heat storage (by 25.2%). Compared to off-cycle defrost method, the prototype required only 10% of defrost time and had significantly lower fluctuations in refrigerated container temperature.
