Modelling of a magnetic refrigeration system with a layered bed.

Number: pap. P09

Author(s) : JACOBS S., ZIMM C., RUSSEK S.

Summary

Modelling is a particularly cost-effective method for studying, designing, and optimizing a magnetic refrigeration system. Several aspects of the modelling and design process are discussed, and an example is given illustrating the optimal design of a bed composed of multiple layers of a magnetocaloric material with a sharp first-order magnetic transition. The model of the system is extended to include the effect of coatings on the magnetocaloric particles in the bed. Such coatings are desirable for the prevention of chemical interaction with the heat transfer fluid, or for the formation of connected beds.
