Modelling of a pre-cooling process of cut flowers.

Author(s) : WANG H., JANSSENS M. F. M.

Summary

A mathematical simulation model describing the thermodynamic behaviour of a pre-cooling process of cut flowers is presented in the paper. The velocity field is obtained using the computer package Phoenics by treating the product as a porous medium. The energy equations and mass equations are solved for the product and the cooling air respectively using the velocity field obtained from the first step as input. Experiments were done to improve and validate the model. In combination with the Phoenics package, the model is capable of predicting velocities, temperatures, and relative humidities and thus optimization can be made to meet various requirements, eg to shorten pre-cooling time and improve energy efficiency.
