Modern reefer with ammonia as refrigerant: design and safety aspects.

Author(s) : HANSEN I.

Summary

Sabroe Marine has designed and constructed the first reefer refrigerating plant based on ammonia in recent time. Ammonia has no negative environmental effect, and its outstanding thermodynamic qualities result in a very high coefficient of performance of the plant, which helps reducing the CO2 emission from the energy production. Ammonia is, however, injurious to health and potentially inflammable. This necessitates special precautions for the construction, which should be executed as a brine system with separate and air-tight compressor room equipped with a comprehensive ventilation system and a washing system for absorption of ammonia in case of a leakage.
