Summary

These proceedings contain 5 papers of this seminar, held on May 17, 1995, in Prague, Czech Republic. The state of the art in this sector is given. European refrigerated transport uses road, rail or sea ferries and, occasionally, internal waterways. Intermodal ISO containers are used for road and maritime transport, sometimes for rail. Most rail systems use purpose-built railcars. Many transport operators need different temperatures in several compartments in a truck. Urban drop off to restaurants or supermarkets dictates low noise levels. Movable partitions and variable temperature control is normal. Design variations for plant and installations are detailed. Testing is complicated by the demands of each compartment. Future trends are discussed. Microprocessor control units are available for temperature and defrosting, also for safety features, performance indicators and recorders. Satellite communication can be used for companies to contact their trucks. As substitutes for CFCs, mainly R502, blends containing HCFC-22 are in general use.
