Multi-variable control of vapor compression processes: using a variable speed scroll compressor with integrated inverter.

Summary

In this paper the focus is on vapor compression systems, that utilize both an electronic expansion valve and a variable speed compressor. Attention is given to the development of a variable speed scroll compressor. A demonstration model is presented, where the scroll compressor and inverter are integrated in one unit. The improvement of performance and minimization of energy consumption require continuous adjustment of the cooling capacity matching the current load conditions. The paper focuses on multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control algorithms that coordinate the compressor speed and expansion valve opening degree. The objectives of the control algorithms are to minimize evaporator superheat and compressor revolutions, while still fulfilling cooling requirements.
