Summary

First, the system is considered as a single-input system in which the only control variable is the energy required to run the heat pump. Next, the same system is modelled as a multi-input system in which the energy input to the heat pump and the mass flow rate of water in the space heating circuit are controlled. The advantages of a multi-input system over a single-input system are illustrated. Simulation tests are carried out to compare the performance of the multiple setpoint control scheme with that of a conventional on-off control scheme. Results show that the multiple setpoint control scheme not only provides better zone temperature control but offers significant potential for energy savings.
