Natural gas driven Vuilleumier heat pumps for residential heating.

Summary

In order to reduce construction effort and cost, the design of a free-piston Vuilleumier heat pump, based on the technology known from Stirling engines, was attempted. This was done by modifying a crank-driven Vuilleumier machine, omitting the crank case and connecting the two cylinders in a line. The free piston machine was operated successfully, although the performance of the crank-driven version was not fully attained.
