Summary

The following are evaluated: dual fuel diesel; diesel with reliquefaction plant; diesel with auxiliary boiler and power assist motor; gas turbine/steam turbine; and steam turbine with contrarotating propeller. Safety, reliability, maintainability, operability, economy and effect on the environment are considered. Based on these studies, a steam turbine with a contrarotating propeller is proposed as an energy saving propulsion system for future LNG carriers.
