New investigations in a FLUENT 2D numerical tool for active magnetic regenerator modelling.

Summary

One year ago, a 2D numerical model of a refrigerant block for a regenerative active magnetic refrigerator has been developed using FLUENT (Legait et al., 2009). A suitable user program (AMR cycle code) has been elaborated and coupled to the software in order to describe the different steps of the AMR cycle. This paper describes the improvement of this model towards a real operating conditions simulator, applicable to variable parallel plates regenerators. Thus, additional user defined functions have been developed in order to take into account the practical working conditions of the refrigerant block. They allow for example the exact reproduction of fluidic conditions in the refrigerant bed and define parameters as MCE, etc. The program being user friendly, the simulation of AMR devices such as the refrigerators existing in G2elab, under real operating conditions, becomes possible. The authors have compared the results obtained by simulations to those obtained by experiments in order to study the validity of the developed numerical model.
